Stop Comment Spam On WordPress
I wanted to stop spam comment because it is so annoying, exasperating, inconvenient and often time-consuming to get rid of.
I stumbled upon a free plugin a few days ago while on Craig’s website (idiotproofblogging.com) and absolutely love it! Thanks Craig!
It’s called Math Comment Spam Protection. This plugin functions as a preventative measure.
During the Holidays I was busy updating HughandNathalie.com and I didn’t post on my inspirational blog for a while. I was excited to do a blog post last week and when I looked at my comments numbers, I almost fell off my chair! I had over 1400 Spam comments which means I was receiving 100 a day…(Now it receives no more than 2-5!).
Once activated, it adds a separate field to your comments form, with the field requiring the commenter to supply the correct answer to a simple mathematical problem. The plugin works impeccably and has done an excellent job of significantly reducing the amount of spam I receive on my blogs WomenthatConnect.com
I included the tutorial video I used to install the plugin. For newbies or people that are not too technical, it get tricky to visit the config page and confirming the current setup and adding a small snippet of code to comments.php.
This video will show you how…It’s fast and you’ll be happy not to get spam comments anymore!

I use Askimet in combination with GASP (I use CommentLuv Premium’s version.) The thing is… the math plugin has been done time and time again in WordPress. There was even one in b2 (the script WordPress was forked from.) It is hackable and unfortunately spam bots can eventually get past them. I really give a lot of kudos to plugin developers trying to aid bloggers in the war on spam, but there will always be spam, even if a little bit.
I do have less spam these days, but I do have some comment spam leak through, about a dozen or less a week.

Hey guys
Thanks for the excellent tutorial.
I do it slightly differently but I have to scan the spam folder daily to find the odd non-spam comment.

Hi Peter, I know there are different ways to protect our blog from spam. I’m sure I’ll find a fancier way soon enough and I’ll be sure to share it. I was just on your blog for the first time tonight…I’ll return often!
